Fire Safety Training for Care Homes

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 specifies that a 'responsible person' must be appointed to manage fire safety for a residential care home. As the responsible person, you must provide appropriate fire safety information, instruction and training for your staff. Our fire safety for care homes course enables you to comply with this requirement and obtain the vital skills and knowledge required in the event of a fire to keep your staff and residents safe.

Each residential care home has it's own unique fire safety challenges.  Our trainers are all ex-service professionals and have a wealth of real world experience.  They will come to you and will adapt the training to your specific needs and location, so that you can get the most out of the training session.  They also come equipped with fire extinguishers, so you'll get to experience how to use a fire extinguisher for real.

In late 2018, the London Fire Brigade inspected 177 care homes and in 10% there was evidence of inadequate training for staff/managers. Of the 177, 57% received a formal notification due to problems with fire safety.

If you want to train a small number of people or need immediate access to fire training, have a look at our online fire safety training too. Our friendly team are always on hand if you have any questions.  Please just ring 01327 552160 for advice or to make a booking.

Fire Safety Training for Care Homes - What You Need To Consider

The most common causes of fire in residential care homes comes from cooking and cookers, which account for 41% of fires. In second place are kitchen appliances at 21%, followed by smoking at 13%.

Tragically care homes account for many fatalities due to fire. Escape planning is particularly important due to mobility issues with residents. Do you know how you would safely and quickly evacuate every person your team cares for?

Here are some ideas to help keep your residents safe:

  • Make an emergency plan and update it regularly.
  • Make sure you have fully planned for the potential of panicking or confused residents in a fire emergency.
  • Make sure you know where the safe 'stay put' zones are in your building.
  • Make sure that fire safety training and fire drills are carried out regularly.
  • Install and maintain appropriate fire detection and suppression systems.
  • Try to avoid allowing residents to smoke in bedrooms and encourage smokers to quit or switch to e-cigarettes.
  • Learn the about the risks of specialist healthcare equipment and emollient creams.
  • Undertake a personal risk assessment for everyone under your care.
  • Do you have enough documentation and awareness of CoSHH hazards?
  • Don't be afraid to ask for expert advice on fire safety topics.
  • Make sure your policies also include fire prevention.
